Released February 16, 2009

EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Horse owners looking for ways to economize on their equine management while keeping their four-hoofed friends happy and healthy can learn cost-saving strategies during three upcoming Michigan State University (MSU) workshops.

“Equinomics: Keeping Horses Healthy in Challenging Times” is a three-part series set for March 18, March 25 and April 1 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the MSU Horse Teaching and Research Center.

The series will kick off March 18 with a presentation titled “Basic Horse Care on a Budget.” Speakers from the MSU Extension Equine Team will discuss topics related to housing, health care, equipment and facilities.

On March 25, participants can learn about cost-saving options that will enable them to reduce expenses without sacrificing their horses’ health or care. Participants are invited to bring ideas they have on how to cut corners while keeping horses healthy.

The April 1 event is “Equine Nutrition on a Budget.” Speakers will outline horse nutritional needs and how owners can meet those needs without breaking the bank. Each participant will learn how to body condition score a horse and will receive a body condition scoring poster and weight tape.

The registration fee for each Equinomics session is $40 for the first member of a family and $25 for each additional member. The fee, which is due March 9, covers refreshments and all materials.

To register, call 517-432-5402 or e-mail mclachl2@msu.edu.
