Impact of Lifestyle on Memory

If you are a caregiver and the person to whom you are providing care exhibits memory difficulties, treat those memory problems as a flashing yellow light. However, do not automatically assume Alzheimer's disease (one form of dementia Alzheimer’s disease) is the likely diagnosis. Memory loss and dementia may have other causes such as infections, head injuries, and alcoholism. When memory difficulties occur, always consider lifestyle a possible factor.

An older adult’s memory challenges (and that can include the caregiver and/or the person to whom care is being given) may be tied to his or her lifestyle or everyday activities.

Memory abilities are enhanced by:

  • eating a colorful, nutrient-dense diet
  • getting a good night’s sleep
  • choosing to do adequate daily physical activity and exercise
  • practicing non-smoking behaviors
  • managing one's use of alcohol
  • finding opportunities for cognitive (or mental) stimulation
  • making social connections.

Medications can negatively affect memory. Get advice from your pharmacist about the possible effects of certain prescription medications on memory. The ones most likely to pose difficulties are sleeping pills, anti- anxiety medications, allergy medications, pain medications, and anti-depressants.

If memory loss is complicating your caregiving responsibilities, take a close look at lifestyle. Consider your diet and be sure it focuses on eating a nutritionally sound breakfast and healthy snacks throughout the day. Look at sleep patterns. If you are unable to get seven- to eight hours of uninterrupted sleep each night, devise a plan that allows you to sleep well at least a few nights a week and look for opportunities to take short daily naps. Assess the amount of daily aerobic exercise you get — and then increase it. Think about smoking or alcohol use - both can negatively affect memory ability. On the other hand, mentally stimulating daily activities such as solving crossword puzzles, or playing word games, as well as socializing with friends and family, can have a positive impact on memory.

Lifestyle affects memory. Remember that.
