Insect tolerant Cotton: Transgenic Bt cotton refers to cotton varieties that have been genetically modified by the insertion of genes from the naturally occurring bacterium, Bacillus thuringiensis. These genes allow the production of the Cry1 Ac Bt toxin within the transgenic cotton plants. Bt cotton producing the Cry1Ac protein is highly effective against tobacco budworms (Heliothis virescens) and provides significant control of bollworms (Helicoverpa zea).
