Agritourism (agriculture + tourism) is a term used to describe businesses organized around the act of attracting consumers to a farm, ranch or any other agricultural, horticultural or agribusiness operation. The intent is to provide an opportunity for the customer to enjoy, be educated and/or be involved in activities related to the operation of that agricultural business.

Examples of agritourism include:

  • farm tours for families and school children
  • day camps
  • farm vacations
  • pick-your-own opportunities
  • hay or sleigh rides
  • harvest festivals, celebrations and
  • overnight stays in a bed and breakfast

Agritourism is often viewed as a way to supplement the farm's income while increasing the consumer's understanding of where and how food is produced and reconnecting people to the land. While agritourism can be a good fit for many agricultural businesses a careful analysis should be completed before you make any commitment.

Agritourism businesses can compliment your existing business but it may also require some additional resources and skills. Fortunately there are many resources available to help you make an informed decision.
