Title:Extension Educator – Food Science Program Area: Agriculture, Food and Environment (AFE) Location: University of Minnesota – St. Paul Campus Initial Deadline: June 6, 2008, or until an acceptable candidate is identified

Extension Educator (EE) - Food Science Description The Extension Educator – Food Science will bring in-depth expertise to critical food science issues by applying his or her expertise to programs and priorities. Food Science Extension Educators (EE) currently conduct education and research primarily in food science for food service, non-profit community events, home-based businesses and consumers. The EE will be responsible for program development and delivery, attention to diversity, use of scholarly research, effective partnerships, use of technology and continuing professional development. This EE position will work with new, diverse and historically underserved audiences.

Responsibilities and Performance Expectations • Identify needs, design, develop, deliver/implement, market, and evaluate educational programs based in scholarly/scientific research and appropriate to the audience, with attention to new, diverse and historically underserved audiences, in conjunction with the program team • Use media, educational products, and classes (online and face-to-face) to reach a variety of audiences • Continued professional development in Food Science including the Certified Food Manager Instructor training, self-directed study, conferences and other appropriate means of maintaining a high level of expertise • Develop and maintain effective regional, University, and state partnerships that further the development and delivery of Extension educational programs • Garner funds and resources to support educational programs through grants and other means as outlined by University policies • Foster and contribute to a positive work climate with colleagues, audiences and partnerships • Use technology for communication, locating information, program design, program delivery and reporting • Assume program leadership for a defined period of time on an identified program, project or priority, as agreed to by program team and leader

Qualifications Required: • A minimum of a Master’s degree in Food Science or a related discipline. • Evidence of experience and ability to work effectively with new, diverse and historically underserved audiences • Evidence of excellent oral and written communications skills • Two years experience in educational curriculum development, teaching and/or training • Knowledge, skills and ability in program development, design, delivery, and evaluation • Evidence of skill in developing and maintaining effective working relationships with colleagues, partners, and stakeholders • Evidence of ability to use technology for communications, information finding, program delivery, and reporting • Commitment to ongoing professional development


Preferred: • Two years post-degree experience in the field of food science, environmental health, public health, culinology or related fields • Multilingual and multicultural skills • Experience acquiring and managing grants • Knowledge, skills and ability to conduct and apply research to program design, delivery and evaluation

About the Food Science Program Area The Minnesota Food Code adopted by the Minnesota Department of Health and the Minnesota Department of Agriculture requires that food service establishments employ a certified food manager (CFM). The CFM must take food safety education training and pass a proctored certification exam. The certification is good for 3 years, following which 4 hours of food safety education is required. Work is also being conducted with the City of Minneapolis to train food service employees in safe food handling practices. Because of the diverse population in the food service industry, multilingual educators (particularly Spanish) are needed. Additional programming includes food safety workshops for non-profit community groups, high risk audiences and for entrepreneurs who home process acid/acidified foods for sale, such as farmers’markets.

Travel Travel is necessary to perform the responsibilities of this position. This person will be expected to provide and use a personal vehicle for travel with reimbursement for mileage and subsistence provided according to University policy. Benefits/Appointment 1. Extension Educator positions have annual University academic professional appointments and Extension academic rank. 2. Promotion in Extension academic rank is expected and is contingent on accomplishments as an Extension Educator. 3. University of Minnesota appointment and benefits, health and life insurance. 4. Reimbursement for travel and subsistence is available in accordance with University policy. (Must provide own means for traveling throughout the state and legally required vehicle insurance.) 5. Title: Nutrition Education Program (Douglas/Sarpy)

University of Nebraska- Full-time, non-tenure leading, faculty position serving Douglas/Sarpy Counties. This position will design, conduct and evaluate educational programs for limited resource families with an emphasis on nutrition and exercise with the goal to help children (6-18 years old) maintain or reach healthy weight.The incumbent will provide training statewide for communities to conduct similar educational programs.They will also secure grants and appropriate funding to promote nutrition educational programs for youth, teachers and parents and facilitate collaborative working relationships between UNL faculty, pediatric centers, WIC, schools and local coalitions.

Required Qualifications: Master's degree with one degree in Nutrition, Nutrition and Exercise, Community Nutrition or closely related field. Registered Dietician. Outstanding teaching skills, excellent oral & written communication skills and experience with computer and information technologies. Criminal history background check will be conducted. Must meet driver standards according to UNL policy and have a Valid Driver's License.
