Ohio State University Extension is offering a nine-week short course for new landowners, and those individuals looking for information on launching agricultural and horticultural enterprises.

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Ohio State University Extension is offering a nine-week short course for new landowners, and those individuals looking for information on launching agricultural and horticultural enterprises.

The Small Farm College will be held one night a week, and will take place at two locations in Ohio:

  • Gallia County: University of Rio Grande, McKenzie Hall, Room 105, Rio Grande; Jan. 22-March 11; 6:30 p.m. until 9 p.m. each day. Contact Richard Stephens at (740) 446-7007 or stephens.163@osu.edu.
  • Butler County: United Food Workers Union Hall, 913 Lebanon Street, Monroe; Jan. 28-March 17; 7 p.m. until 9:30 p.m. each day. A farm tour will be included in the program on March 15. Contact Steve Bartels at (513) 887-3722 or bartels.2@osu.edu.

Small Farm College topics include: getting started (goal setting, resource inventory, business planning); seeking assistance (identifying various agencies, organizations, and groups); managing natural resources (soils, ponds, streams, woodlands and wildlife); tackling legal issues; financing and record keeping; crop and horticultural production options; animal production options; and marketing alternatives.

The cost of the course is $150.00 per person and $50 per each additional family member, and includes Small Farm College class materials.
