General GPS Navigation Exercise – Finding how far you are from home

Summary:

Users will investigate how to find the distances to points of interest. This exercise will provide experience in quick location and navigation and explore the Map and Compass pages.

  1. Turn your GPS Unit on.
  2. Allow unit to acquire current position troubleshooting: If unit does not report position, go to the Map page and press menu. Make sure the unit is using active GPS and not in simulation mode.
  3. Press the “Find” button.
  4. Select “Cities” [use cursor to move to cities, when highlighted press ENTR button].
  5. Nearest locations are automatically listed.
  6. Press MENU button.
  7. Select “Find by Name” [move cursor to highlight and press ENTR button.]
  8. Use the cursor to move to the letters of the city. Press ENTR to select the letter.
  9. When you have spelled most of the name, you will get a list of possible locations
  10. Select the location desired [highlight the name and press ENTR].
  11. Once selected you will have the option of “SAVE” “MAP” or “Go To.”
  12. Choose “Go To” [highlight “Go To” and push the ENTR button].
  13. On the Map Page you now will see a line directing you to the location.
  14. Press PAGE button to go to the Compass Page.
  15. Examine the Compass Page for information about the location.
