A recently-published Michigan State University publication aims to help livestock producers assess potential environmental risks present in their operation. The target audiences for this publication are small and medium-sized farms of any livestock type.

"We plan to use this tool as an organized beginning point to help producers assess their farms and to provide a priority ranking to help them reach their goals", says Natalie Rector, Nutrient Management Specialist with Michigan State University. After the farm assessment, this tool will let a producer know what items will need to be addressed in greater detail if they choose to pursue a comprehensive nutrient management plan, which is needed for both NRCS cost share or for voluntary compliance with MAEAP.

Another pressing need in nutrient management is that of metrics to assess whether producers are following their comprehensive nutrient management plans (CNMPs). According to Rector, this assessment can fill this equally important role. "It would also work well for a report card after a CNMP has been completed."

The booklet is in easy to read bullet point format and covers briefly, all components of a CNMP plus some additional items such as feed and odor management, emergency planning, employee training, etc. You can download this publication, FAS112, at: PDF Version (Free) | Order print version. Cost $5.00
