RENO, Nev. -- During wildfires, conditions often get very dark and smoky, making it difficult for firefighters to find their way around. In addition, during major wildfires, out-of-town firefighters who are not familiar with our communities may be brought in to help. There are several things homeowners can do to help firefighters find their homes and other essential items during a wildfire:

• Street and address signs: Make sure that house address signs are readily visible from the street. Use reflective, fire-resistant materials for street signs and house numbers. Use letters and numbers that are at least 4 inches high. Street signs should be at every intersection leading to your house.
• Lights: Turn on outside lights. Leave a light on in each room.
• Water Sources: If you have an emergency water source, such as a pool or pond, make a large sign to alert firefighters of it and let them know where it is. For example, on a large piece of plywood spray paint with fluorescent paint "pool in back," and leave the sign in front of your house.
