Metadata is reference data relating to the data. It is often referred to as "data about data." It can be thought of as the citation or attribute information relating to the data in question. Metadata may contain a full range of information, including the original author, the use and purpose of the data, the accuracy of the data, the processing of the information to the final product, and author information, as well as other possible fields of information.
