Free and confidential Environmental Assessment and Comprehensive Nutrient Management Planning Assistance is now available to livestock producers in the western half of the US. The Comprehensive Livestock Environmental Assessment & Nutrient Management Plan (CLEANmp) will provide confidential and free technical assistance to livestock and poultry producers. The CLEANmp aims to help operators reduce contamination in water runoff and protect water quality.
Participation in the program will require these steps:
- Livestock and poultry producers must initiate the request for assistance.
- Assistance will be provided by eligible Technical Service Providers that are NRCS registered (to work in their respective states).
- The CLEANmp will contract with these local TSPs for the requested assistance at no cost to the producer.
- Producers will receive free and confidential reports, an environmental assessment (EA), a nutrient management plan (NMP) or review, or both. These reports will provide practical recommendations.
- Livestock and poultry producers do not need to possess or apply for a NPDES permit in order to receive technical assistance. Furthermore, the results of these assessments are confidential and will not be used to impose NPDES requirements.
- Livestock and poultry producers across the west are eligible to apply.
Applications are available online for any producer wishing to participate. Live links at the bottom of the page will get you to the application page and other project information.
The Environmental Resources Coalition (ERC) is a non-profit group dedicated to water quality protection and improvement efforts. We’ve recently been awarded federal dollars to help livestock operators west of the Mississippi River prepare Nutrient Management Plans (NMPs) and to provide producers with Environmental Assessments (EA). Our contractor, SES, Inc., performs agriculture program development, resource management and environmental consulting. You may be aware that they also helped develop the Good Environmental Livestock Production Practices (GELPPs) which are now American National Standards for livestock production.
CLEANmp is a four-year program, but funding is limited. Assistance will cease when grant funds are expended.
For more information about the CLEANmp please contact, Project Manager, Betty Wyse or Project Technical Director, Mark White at 573-634-7078.”
