STAR CITY, Ark. - For the first-time college student going away from home, living in a small, cramped room with sterile cinder-block walls may indeed be an adjustment.

But there is hope, according to Jane Newton, extension agent-family and consumer sciences for the University of Arkansas Division of Agriculture.

"Your dorm room will be your place to study and kick back with friends," said Newton. "It should be where you can express yourself, shout your style and parade your pizzazz - without breaking campus rules or your budget!"

Newton suggests simple items to help turn a dull dorm room into a comfortable home away from home.

First, consider the décor:

• A comforter, sheets, throw pillows and towels can add color and warmth.
• Inexpensive curtains can replace the notoriously ugly ones already there. (Keep the originals to put back up when you leave.)
• A large rug can soften the look and feel of hard, institutional flooring.
• Posters, photos or pennants can reinforce a theme or special interests.

Next, make the room as comfortable as possible:

• A good table or desk lamp is essential.
• A comfortable chair - perhaps an inflatable one - is a must for studying or lounging.
• A mattress topper or pad made of fiberfill or feathers can soften a dorm bed.

Finally, invest in items to maximize the small space:

• Closet storage accessories, such as peg racks, over-the-door shoe racks, belt and tie holders, and hanging shelves, can help keep your stuff off the floor or your roommate’s bed.
• Plastic totes can collect laundry or hold bathroom supplies.
• A large bulletin board is essential for assignments, schedules, and messages.
• Filing space is a must-have for completed assignments, insurance papers, and letters from home.

With a little money and a lot of creativity, the college student can have a comfortable, attractive room in which to study or relax.
