  1. I've read that beets, turnips, carrots, and spinach may not be suitable for use in homemade baby food because they contain nitrates that are harmful to infants. Does this only relate to commercially produced (i.e. fertilized) vegetables or could it also apply to homegrown or organically produced vegetables? Updated: October 20, 2009
